A Gallery Practicum class curated exhibit

This exhibit is a collection of artists who each uniquey celebrate the serenity, harmony and tumult of nature.

Inspired by her childhood and the belief that her toys and dolls had human spirits, combined with her studies in philosophy that revealed a harsh side to the world, Elanor James’s work puts human faces on animals.

A life-long animal lover, Kristy Guenther developed her skills as an illustrator and used them to create wildlife with its unique characteristics and interesting habitats that come to life on her canvases.

Bridging humanity and nature, Kristina Kaiser’s work emphasizes sustainability and resilience by transforming recycled materials into sculptural art, she celebrates nature’s endurance while highlighting the value of reimagining discarded elements, telling a story of memory and hope with each piece.

Hayley Dayis’s work is a reflection of her deep connection to the land, drawn from her unique practice of foraging pigments directly from the Earth. For the past four years, she has spent each winter in Cauca, Colombia, collecting volcanic soils by hand from riverbeds, cliff sides, highways, and construction site and painting intricate landscapes of those lands that have inspired her.

mission

Through its well-trafficked location at the entrance of the Art and Music Library, Frontispace engages the UR community with thought-provoking exhibitions. The gallery’s year-round schedule and summer residency program stimulate dialogue and connect the university to the broader Western New York artistic landscape, with a focus on local and emerging artists working in a variety of media. The gallery also serves the Art and Art History Department by hosting special exhibitions of work by visiting artists, seniors, and alumni.

our name

Our gallery takes its inspiration from the frontispiece, traditionally an illustration facing the title page of a book that sets the tone for the contents within. With its rotating exhibitions, Frontispace invites visitors to pause and reflect as they pass through the entryway to the Art and Music library.
