Second Look
Mar 17 -- April 6
Nicholas H. Ruth, Mizin Shin, and Heather Swenson

Second Look features the work of Nicholas H. Ruth, Mizin Shin, and Heather Swenson, each of whom investigates the intersections of shared spaces, societal systems, and individual perception. Through diverse media and approaches, their works analyze the roles of objects and spaces, the complex systems that underpin daily life, and the hidden layers of ordinary environments. Ruth's exploration of signs discusses their dual role as conveyors of meaning and markers in the built environment, questioning the absurdity and weight of the messages they carry. Shin's work focuses on interdependence within societal systems; this time, she centers corn as a lens to examine the intricate networks that connect us across industry and culture. Swenson's close observation of urban interventions highlights the unnoticed and improvisational creativity that challenges dominant structures in public spaces.

mission
Through its well-trafficked location at the entrance of the Art and Music Library, Frontispace engages the UR community with thought-provoking exhibitions. The gallery’s year-round schedule and summer residency program stimulate dialogue and connect the university to the broader Western New York artistic landscape, with a focus on local and emerging artists working in a variety of media. The gallery also serves the Art and Art History Department by hosting special exhibitions of work by visiting artists, seniors, and alumni.

our name
Our gallery takes its inspiration from the frontispiece, traditionally an illustration facing the title page of a book that sets the tone for the contents within. With its rotating exhibitions, Frontispace invites visitors to pause and reflect as they pass through the entryway to the Art and Music library.
